Miami Beach is a coastal resort city in Miami-Dade County, Florida located on natural and man-made barrier islands between the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay, and has been one of America’s pre-eminent beach resorts since the early 20th century. Visitors can swim, surf and jet ski in the warm and crystal-clear Atlantic waters, nap on the white sands, work on a tan or simply watch the beautiful people, especially at South Beach, a favorite of models and celebrities.
Connected by bridges to mainland Miami, Miami Beach features wide beaches from North Shore Open Space Park, past palm-lined Lummus Park to South Pointe Park. The southern end, South Beach, is known for its international cachet with models and celebrities, and its early-20th-century architecture in the Art Deco Historic district with pastel-colored buildings, especially on Ocean Drive.
In 1979, Miami Beach’s Art Deco Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Art Deco District is the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the world and comprises hundreds of hotels, apartments and other structures erected between 1923 and 1943 with Mediterranean, Streamline Moderne and Art Deco all represented in the District.
South Beach (also known as SoBe) is comprised of the area from Biscayne Street (also known as South Pointe Drive) one block south of 1st Street to 23rd Street. It is one of the more popular areas of Miami Beach where topless sunbathing by women, although illegal, is tolerated.
Miami Beach, particularly Ocean Drive of what is now the Art Deco District, has been featured prominently in many popular Hollywood blockbuster movies including the 1983 feature film Scarface and the 1996 comedy The Birdcage.
Lincoln Road, running east-west parallel between 16th and 17th Streets, is a nationally known spot for outdoor dining, bicycling, rollerblading and shopping, and features galleries of well-known designers, artists and photographers such as Romero Britto, Peter Lik and Jonathan Adler.
Whether you crave a relaxing day at the beach, an exciting night at a club or a mouth-watering feast at a gourmet restaurant, Miami Beach is the place to be!
